Zollverein and the man-made industrial landscape in the Ruhrgebiet. Pressrelease 28.11.2011 The Foundation for the Preservation of Industrial Monuments and Historical Culture is utterly convinced that the Ruhrgebiet and the man-made industrial landscape along the rivers Ruhr, Emscher and Lippe should be inscribed into the UNESCO world heritage list. As an extension to the current world heritage site at the “Zollverein Mining Complex” it is therefore proposing to take-up a series of individual monument protection sites in the Ruhrgebiet and add them to the UNESCO list under the collective title “Zollverein and the man-made industrial landscape of the Ruhrgebiet“. Alongside highlights like the Landscape Park in Duisburg, the Gasometer in Oberhausen, the Zollern Colliery and the Hansa Cooking Plant in Dortmund, and the lock park in Waltrop, less well-known objects such as the Alte Emscher pumping station in Duisburg (it’s still in operation) and the Malakoff tower at the Prosper Colliery in Bottrop are also included in the proposal. Not forgetting the Eisenheim settlement in Oberhausen, Margarethenhöhe in Essen, and the Mutten valley in Witten, the cradle of coal industry along the River Ruhr, where it all began. “At the start of the project we had never reckoned with such broad agreement and support”, said Karl Jasper, the chair of the Foundation for the Preservation of Industrial Monuments and Historical Culture. “But we seem to have got it all right to date by putting all our bets on networking and above all on a strategy of common thinking and action in the Ruhrgebiet.
